Environment sketch

Hi you all. Today we are going to do an environment sketch: black and white this time. In this one I’m going to use brushes as basic technique.

So let’s start as usual by creating a new document.

environment sketch

Then draw a horizon line. This is very important in environment sketching. Then draw vanishing lines. It is called 1 point perspective. Every artist should study this. It is very important to draw these lines as straight as possible.

environment sketch

Then select the scene borders and stroke them.

And begin with painting basic shapes. Keep with these lines.

Maybe basic value on the fly:

It is very important for the image to keep the balance of white and black.

Mix the brushes. For rough edged columns I’m just use Pencil Tool.

Further and further.

environment sketch

Draw some cityscape outside of our Window. No the right it is going to be a window.

I’m beginning to pt some texture with low spacing brush.

For shading walls and parts of the elements I’m using these brush settings.

environment sketch

More
black on the left. Because when you are sketching in black & white
and picking color only from the image, you will possibly loose the
black color, true black.

Some texture on the walls too.

Remember
that the further the environment foes the more contrast it loses in the
vanishing point. So our further part of the image must be a little bit
lighter (B&W).

I will draw some additional details. This time it’s going to be a curtain.

environment sketch

In fact there will be several curtains that go in the vanishing pint to. Each I will do on the separate layer.

environment sketch

Erase back to form the edges. That why we need these curtains on separate layers.

environment sketch

Draw surface lights. Surface lights are little lights that Stay on the Borders or edges of the object.

environment sketch

Than we will work with the lights and little dots like dust or something.

For
the lights I’m using one of the Ryan’s Churche
techniques. Create a layer draw lights directionally with soft low flow
brush and then erase the borders of the lights.

And we are done here.
