Adobe planning Mac version of Production Studio

March 15, 2006 – Sources familiar with Adobe’s plans report the company intends to release a Mac version of Production Studio 2, marking the return of Premiere to the Mac as well as the first Mac versions of Encore DVD and Audition.

Adobe abandoned support for the Mac version of its Premiere video editing software nearly three years ago, following stiff competition from Apple’s Final Cut line that eroded Adobe’s marketshare on the Mac platform.

Adobe shipped Production Studio at the start of 2006 for Windows only. At present, the only Adobe application for video that offers Mac compatibility is After Effects 7.0, a competitor to Apple’s Motion. Audition is Adobe’s answer to Apple’s Soundtrack, offering audio recording, mixing, editing, and mastering functionality, while Encore DVD competes with Apple’s DVD Studio Pro.

Development of Production Studio 2 is currently in early stages, with a release not expected until the second half of 2007. Given that time frame, sources have suggested the software may be released with support exclusively for Intel-based Macs in order to streamline development and optimization.

Specific features of the new software are not known at this time.

Think Secret recently reported on Adobe’s progress with Creative Suite 3, which will include support for Intel-based Macs and could ship before 2006 is out.
