Merry Christmas Card – Paper Snowflakes on Green Background in Adobe Photoshop CS6
Using the Ellipse Tool (U), we may represent many small ellipses, each one on a separate layer.
Insert a rectangle on several of the made ellipses, applying the Rectangle Tool (U).
Now we have combine in a group all the ellipses’ layers and the one belonging to the rectangle (press CTRL button to select the necessary layers and hold on the left mouse’s button while dragging the selected layers on Create a new group icon from bottom part of the Layers panel). Set Fill to 0% for the made group.
Click on Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layers panel and go to Blending Options: Custom, find Advanced Blending and check Layer Mask Hides Effects.
Add Drop Shadow:
We’ve got the next result:
Make a copy of the recently created group containing the ellipses and the rectangle. Remove the Layer style – Drop Shadow from the copy. Put the group’s copy into a rasterized layer by selecting it firstly in Layers panel and then press CTRL+E to Merge Down. Hold CTRL button when clicking on the rasterized layer in Layers panel to get the next selection.
Select after that the layer containing the snowflake in Layers panel and click on the bottom part of the Layers panel on Add layer mask. Press after that this combination: CTRL+I to Invert the color in the mask.
Hide the rasterized layer of the group’s copy because we don’t need it anymore. Insert the mask on the snowflake’s layer by choosing Add layer mask on the bottom part of the Layers panel and choose the Hard Round brush of black color
Paint in the mask to hide the rest of the snowflake on its right side.
Insert the mask on the group containing the circles and the rectangle by choosing Add layer mask on the bottom part of the Layers panel and choose the Soft Round brush of black color.
Paint in the mask to hide the unnecessary elements on the top and bottom parts.
We’ve got the next result:
Click Create new fill or adjustment layer from bottom part of the Layers panel and click to Curves to adjust the curve shape as shown to make a little color corrections.

Finally insert the greeting text on our holiday card. Select the Horizontal Type tool (T). Select a font, size and color in the Character panel. I used this font from FontSquirrel.
Click in the canvas and type ‘Merry Christmas’. Press Enter to apply the text.
Click on Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layers panel and select Drop Shadow.
We’ve got the next result:
