How to create holiday card with Christmas balls on the abstract background in Photoshop CS5
Let’s represent now an inside highlight on the ball, using the Ellipse Tool (U).
Set Fill to 0% for this layer and click on Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layers panel and select Gradient Overlay.
Click in the color bar to open the Gradient Editor and set the color stops as shown. Click OK to close the Gradient Editor dialog box.
We’ve got the next result:
Now we’ll represent the highlight on the bototom part of the ball, use the Ellipse Tool (U) to draw the first ellipse with #D12622 color. Press Alt button or select Subtract from shape area (-) from Options bar and draw another ellipse to cut the top part as shown.
Set Fill to 50% for this layer.
Take the same tool applied before and represent the top highlight on the ball of the color #E5282E.
Now we have to represent the ball’s support. In this case take the Rectangle Tool (U) and draw an element like the next one, use Add Anchor Point Tool to insert one anchor point on the middle part of the bottom ball’s part. The shape may be corrected with the Convert Point Tool.
Set Fill to 0% for this layer and click on Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layers panel and select Gradient Overlay.
Click in the color bar to open the Gradient Editor and set the color stops as shown. Click OK to close the Gradient Editor dialog box.
We’ve got the next result:
Use the Ellipse Tool (U) to represent the next element of the ball’s support.
Click on Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layers panel and select Gradient Overlay.
Click in the color bar to open the Gradient Editor and set the color stops as shown. Click OK to close the Gradient Editor dialog box.
We’ve got the next result:
Now we have to represent the next element on the ball’s support, using the same tool and the color #241A0F.
Take the Ellipse tool (U) and the Rectangle Tool (U) to represent now a loop. Firstly choose the Ellipse Tool (U) to represent the next ellipse and then hold Alt button, select the Rectangle Tool (U) and draw the next rectangle to cut out the bottom part of the ellipse. Set Fill to 0% for this layer.
Click on Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layers panel and select Stroke.
We’ve got the next result:
It’s the result you must get on this stage:
Combine in a group all the layers containing the tree’s ball (press CTRL button to select the necessary layers and hold on the left mouse’s button while dragging the selected layers on Create a new group icon from bottom part of the Layers panel). Make a copy of the new group and apply the Free Transform (Ctrl+T) command to make smaller the copy, placing it as it is shown below:
Now we have to insert a lot of small stars, select the Custom Shape Tool (U) in the Tools bar, in the Options bar click the Shape to open the selection menu. Find 5 Point Star at the bottom of the menu, and then double-click a shape thumbnail to select it.
Click and drag to draw the stars as shown. They have the colors #FBF1B7 and #2A361C.
Now we have to create a new file (File>New) with the size 1px by 3px (RGB color mode) at a resolution of 72 pixels/inch with Transparent background. Take the Pencil Tool (B), set brush size to 1px in Options bar and click to paint 2 pixels with white color as shown. Choose Edit > Define Pattern. Enter a name for the pattern in the Pattern Name dialog box.
Get back to our main document. Choose the Pen Tool (P), set the drawing mode on Shape Layers in Options bar and draw a small thread for the ball as shown.
Set Fill to 0% for this layer and go to Layer Style > Blending Options to check Layer Mask Hides Effects.
Click on Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layers panel and select Stroke. Choose Fill Type – Pattern, select recent created pattern from the pop-up panel, and click OK.
We’ve got the next result:
Insert the mask on the layer by choosing Add layer mask on the bottom part of the Layers panel and choose the Soft Mechanical brush of black color.
Paint in the mask using this brush to hide the next zone on the layer as it is demonstrated below:
Using the same method, we may represent the thread for the other ball:
Click Create new fill or adjustment layer from bottom part of the Layers panel and click to Curves to adjust the curve shape as shown to make a little color corrections.
