Foundations of Creativity

Hello and welcome to my tutorial on foundations of creativity. One of the aspects of creativity, as I think, is to find and

connect different artistic forms and shapes, text and texture and bring them into one product or design.

So here we go. This is more technical tutorial so no art pieces in the end.

Let’s begin, as always, and create a document with any dimensions you want.

foundations of creativity

Chose a shape! I really don’t have any idea what it’s going to be, what the idea is. Ok, I have a shape now.

Note the path settings. It has no fill on stroke options, just contours.

I really want to overlay the shape with some king of really cool effect brush, full of different settings.

And here is my brush (will be available for Download) with all the settings.

Select the whole path and overlay it with brush we’ve made. Remember that the pressure simulation must be On and the brush

size must be precise, like on the picture.

Oh yes, before all that create a new layer for more flexibility.

So we got a shape here. To be creative is to find out what we need this shape for and how to use it. Well, definitely

creativity comes from a lot of things, this is just little piece.

So let’s experiment on transforming, rotating, applying some filers and so on. Let’s search our design.

Now I’m beginning to think over some designs.

So apply a quick mask along with the gradient to define the areas that will be covered with a filter.

We now have only half of the picture within the selection area.

Apply ripple filter. The filter is applied to only half of the picture as we planned.

I’ll also make a little bit difference between the tones by adjusting the image with Hue and saturation adjustment.

Now I will practice the form transforming our shape. You got to try every of these manipulations. If you don’t get this right

one time, you will at least learn something and then it will be like an instinct of yours.

I like a lot the twirl filter. SO, actually this is probably the first filter I’m always applying when it comes to

experimenting with different shapes. This time it was hit from the first time.

A little bit of transformation and we have a hit here.

So as you can see- the shape I’ve created really looks like some kind of little ship. The text line comes from the same idea.

Basically the text came out from the shape I’ve made. I hope you got this right: no matter what the shape on logo is styled:

photo real or cartoon like it has to be connected making the design work. The word- WORK actually has a lot of sense in whole

design. The design must work and has to say something to the client.

And this I think this will be the end of our tutorial on creativity and design theory. I hope you’ve enjoyed the words here

more that shapes. Keep it cool.
